Manual Therapy in Cervical and Lumbar Radiculopathy: A Systematic Review of the Literature.

Researchers in Poland pulled together 27 randomized controlled trials that tested manual therapy techniques like traction, manipulation, and mobilization for people with nerve pain radiating down the arm or leg from the neck or lower back. The work was careful and systematic, following established guidelines for reviewing published research. What they found was a fairly mixed picture: traction-based treatments appeared somewhat helpful for neck-related nerve pain in reducing pain and restoring function, but the evidence for lower back nerve pain was scattered across so many different techniques that no clear pattern emerged.
Most of the studies they reviewed were of moderate or low quality, which means we should hold the findings loosely rather than treat them as settled fact.
This review looked at what research tells us about hands-on treatment approaches for nerve pain that travels down your arm or leg. For neck-related nerve pain, the studies suggested that traction techniques (where gentle pulling is used to decompress the nerve) may help with pain relief and getting back to normal activities, though the overall strength of that evidence isn't overwhelming.
For lower back nerve pain, the picture was less clear because different clinics used so many different techniques that researchers couldn't spot a common thread. The honest truth is that most of the research in this area still has room for improvement in how it's designed and measured, so there's more to learn before we can say with confidence how well these approaches work for everyone.
