Effects of Dog-Assisted Occupational Therapy on Upper Limb Functions in ALS and Other Neuromuscular Disorders: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Study.

People with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and other neuromuscular disorders often lose hand strength and dexterity as their disease progresses, and finding rehabilitation approaches that also help mood is a real challenge. This pilot trial compared a two-week occupational therapy program that included sessions with a therapy dog against the same program without the dog, looking at grip strength, manual dexterity, and mood symptoms. Both groups showed improved hand grip strength after treatment, but mood symptoms improved only in the group that had the dog-assisted sessions, and that group also ended up with better post-treatment scores overall.
When ALS patients were looked at separately, gains in grip strength and mood again appeared only in the dog-assisted group. The results are interesting because they suggest an added benefit from incorporating an animal into therapy, but this was a small pilot study, so the findings should be seen as preliminary rather than conclusive.

This study looked at whether adding sessions with a therapy dog to a standard two-week occupational therapy program made a difference for hand grip strength, hand dexterity, and mood, compared to the usual program alone. But mood symptoms only improved in the group that included the dog-assisted sessions, and that group also had somewhat better results overall by the end. When researchers looked specifically at people with ALS, both the strength and mood improvements showed up only in the dog-assisted group. These results are encouraging in the sense that they point to a possible added benefit, but this was a small pilot study with sixty-eight participants split between two groups, so it can't tell us how lasting these effects are or whether they would hold up in a larger trial.
It's a promising early step rather than a settled answer.

This pilot randomised controlled trial (N=68) tested whether substituting three weekly sessions of dog-assisted interaction for standard occupational therapy, within a two-week program, altered upper limb function and mood outcomes in ALS and other neuromuscular disorders, relative to the same program without animal-assisted therapy. As a pilot study, its primary value lies in demonstrating that this intervention design and outcome battery, hand grip strength, manual dexterity, and mood measures, are feasible to deliver and assess within a clinical rehabilitation setting; the abstract does not report on recruitment or retention rates specifically. On clinical outcomes, both groups improved in hand grip strength within-group (p=0.004-0.03), while mood symptoms improved only within the animal-assisted therapy group (p=0.0003-0.03).
Between-group comparisons, adjusted for baseline via analysis of covariance, favoured the animal-assisted group post-treatment (p=0.01-0.03). In the ALS subgroup, both grip strength and mood improvements were seen only in the animal-assisted arm (p=0.001-0.04), with better post-treatment values (p=0.0007-0.05). These findings should be read as exploratory given the small sample and short intervention window.
No adverse events were reported in the abstract, though safety was not explicitly assessed as an outcome. Replication in larger, adequately powered trials is needed before any effectiveness claims can be made with confidence.
