Effects of Traditional Indian Dance on Motor Skills and Balance in Children with Down syndrome.

Researchers in India tested whether learning traditional classical dances like Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, and Kathak could help improve movement skills and balance in children with Down syndrome. They compared 36 children aged 6 to 10 who either took dance classes or did standard neuromuscular training exercises, each for an hour three times a week over six weeks. The children who learned dance showed notably larger gains in overall gross motor skills (the coordinated movements of large muscle groups) and specifically in locomotor skills like walking, running, and jumping.
Balance improved in both groups roughly equally, so neither approach had a clear edge there. The findings suggest that dance may be a particularly effective way to develop movement patterns in children with Down syndrome, though the research is still early.
