Balancing in Virtual Reality: Motor Learning and Functional Improvement in Down Syndrome.

Balance training can be difficult to make engaging for young adults with Down syndrome, and virtual reality offers one way to combine practice with feedback and motivation. This trial compared Nintendo Wii balance games against a no-training control in adults with Down syndrome and typically developing adults, looking at whether game performance improved over four weeks and whether that translated into changes on standard functional motor tests. Both training groups improved their in-game scores over the training period, though individual learning curves varied widely, especially among participants with Down syndrome. The Down syndrome training group also showed improvement on functional motor tests from before to after training, while typically developing participants either improved or plateaued.
Typically developing groups still outperformed Down syndrome groups overall on functional tests. Because within-group pre-post improvement does not by itself prove the training caused the functional change, and the sample was small, these findings should be read as encouraging but preliminary evidence rather than a firm conclusion about effectiveness.
