Prevention of Non-Contact Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injuries among Youth Female Athletes: An Umbrella Review.

Female athletes get ACL injuries at higher rates than their male peers, and most of these happen without contact (a sudden twist or change of direction rather than a collision). This umbrella review looked at 16 earlier reviews and 2 newer studies to find out whether exercise-based prevention programs actually work. The answer appears to be yes: across 11 studies, prevention programs cut the rate of non-contact ACL injuries by about two-thirds.
The programs that worked best started before the season began and mixed together at least three different types of exercises. The evidence is reasonably solid, though the authors were careful to note they were drawing from existing research rather than running new experiments themselves.
