Neuromuscular exercise in children with Down Syndrome: a systematic review.

Researchers looked at ten randomized controlled trials to find out whether neuromuscular exercise (training that targets the brain-muscle connection) actually works for children and teenagers with Down Syndrome, and if so, how to do it well. They focused on three things: balance, muscle strength, and flexibility. The good news is that for children over 8 years old, neuromuscular exercise in various forms was associated with noticeable gains in leg and chest strength, and balance improved when the training focused on core stability or used isokinetic machines (equipment that measures and controls muscle effort).
However, the evidence for younger children under 8 years old was thin, which means we cannot yet say whether these approaches work for that age group. The researchers also looked carefully at how the exercise was delivered: most effective programs ran about three to five times a week, lasted between six and fifteen minutes per session, and typically ran for six to twelve weeks total.
This review gathered together the best quality research on exercise training for children and teenagers with Down Syndrome. Researchers found that when children over 8 years old did certain types of muscle training, their leg strength and chest strength got noticeably stronger, and their balance improved.
The training worked best when it was done a few times each week in fairly short sessions, and when it included work on core strength (the muscles around your middle that help you stay upright). We do not yet have enough evidence to know whether the same approaches work well for younger children under 8 years old, so that remains a question worth exploring further.
It is worth knowing that different ways of doing the exercise seemed to help, including using machines, vibration training, and standing on wobbly surfaces.
