Researchers pooled data from 59 studies of physical exercise for children and adolescents with ADHD, examining how different types of activity affected executive functions (the mental skills that help us plan, focus, and control impulses) and ADHD symptoms like hyperactivity and difficulty concentrating. They found that all forms of physical exercise improved executive functions overall, but the type of exercise mattered. Activities that require quick reactions to changing environments, such as team sports or reactive games, showed the largest gains in executive function.
For specific ADHD symptoms, steady aerobic activities like running or cycling appeared more effective at reducing hyperactivity and inattention. The evidence came from 44 studies with around 1,750 children and adolescents in total, making this one of the largest summaries of exercise research in this population.
