Aqua-Plyometric Exercises-Induced Changes in Muscle Strength, Bone Mineral Properties, and Physical Fitness in Patients With Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis: A 12-Week, Randomized Controlled Trial.

Researchers in this 2023 trial wanted to find out whether aqua-plyometric exercises (explosive jumping and bounding movements done in water) could help young people with polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (a form of inflammatory joint disease affecting multiple joints). They split 48 teenagers aged 12 to 18 into two groups: one did lower-body aqua-plyometric work over 12 weeks, while the other did standard exercises. The aqua-plyometric group showed noticeably greater gains in leg strength measured at different speeds, stronger bones (measured several ways including bone density and mineral content), and better overall physical fitness.
The findings suggest that water-based plyometric training may offer particular benefits for this population, though the study involved a modest number of participants and ran for a relatively short time.
