Role of strengthening exercises in management and prevention of overuse sports injuries of lower extremity: a systematic review.

Runners and athletes in jumping and landing sports deal with overuse injuries because of the repetitive pounding their lower limbs take. This systematic review looked at whether strengthening exercises could help manage these injuries once they happen, and whether they could prevent them from coming back. The authors searched several medical databases and applied strict quality standards to find relevant research, eventually reviewing seven studies that tested strengthening interventions on athletes with lower extremity overuse injuries.
Three of those studies looked at treatment of existing injuries, and four examined prevention of recurrence. The analysis suggests that strength training appears to reduce pain, improve muscle performance and fitness, and support quicker return to sport. The body of evidence was mixed in quality though, ranging from excellent to fair when rated on standard quality scales.

The good news is that the current evidence points toward strength work playing a real role in both healing from these injuries and reducing the chance they'll happen again, though more specific guidance would require additional research.
