The week after running a marathon: Effects of running vs elliptical training vs resting on neuromuscular performance and muscle damage recovery.

Marathon runners are often told to rest completely afterward, but it's unclear whether light activity in the days after a marathon actually helps or hinders recovery. This trial followed 64 marathon finishers who were randomly assigned right after the race to either resting, easy running, or elliptical training sessions performed 48, 96 and 144 hours post-race, and tracked blood markers of muscle damage plus a jump test over the following eight days. Muscle damage markers recovered similarly across all three groups, with no statistically significant differences detected. However, the running group showed better jump performance at 96 hours compared with the resting group, suggesting a possible boost to neuromuscular recovery rather than harm.
The main limitation is that this is a single moderate-sized trial with a specific, moderate-intensity protocol, so it doesn't establish whether running was better than elliptical training, only that each active option compared reasonably to rest.
After a marathon, many runners wonder whether resting completely is best, or whether some gentle movement in the following days might help the body recover. This study looked at 64 people who finished a marathon and were randomly placed into three groups: resting, easy running, or using an elliptical machine, with the exercise groups doing 40-minute moderate sessions two, four and six days after the race. The researchers measured muscle damage through blood tests and tested muscle power with a jump test over the following week.
Muscle damage recovered at a similar pace no matter which group people were in, with no clear differences found between them. Interestingly, those who did the easy running sessions showed better jump performance four days after the race compared with those who simply rested, hinting that light running might support how quickly leg power recovers. This was one trial with a specific type of light exercise, so it doesn't tell us whether running is better than the elliptical, or how findings might apply to different exercise intensities or paces.

This randomised controlled trial enrolled 64 marathon finishers (54 men, 10 women) and randomised them post-race into resting recovery, running, or elliptical training groups, with the exercise groups completing 40-minute continuous sessions at 95-105% of first ventilatory threshold heart rate at 48, 96 and 144 hours post-marathon. Muscle damage was tracked via lactate dehydrogenase and creatine kinase at multiple timepoints through 192 hours, alongside squat jump performance at baseline, immediately post-race, and 48, 96 and 144 hours later. No significant intervention effect or intervention-by-time interaction was found for either muscle damage marker (p>0.05), indicating no evidence that active recovery altered the biochemical trajectory of muscle damage compared with rest.
The running group showed significantly better squat jump performance at 96 hours than the resting group (108.29±10.64% vs 100.58±9.16%, p=0.020, d=0.80), a moderate effect size on a secondary neuromuscular outcome. The trial does not directly compare running against elliptical training for superiority, only each against rest, so relative efficacy between the two active modalities remains unestablished. Findings are limited to this specific protocol, intensity and timing, and the sample, while reasonably sized for this type of trial, represents a single study requiring replication before firmer conclusions about return-to-running timing can be drawn.
